Muuto Introduces Relevo by Studiopepe
A series of sculptural rugs made from 100% New Zealand wool
The Relevo Rug by Milan-based design duo Studiopepe is Muuto’s very first tufted rug – a soft and deeply tactile piece asking to be touched. A strong and artful expression for the floor, Relevo - meaning relief in Latin - brings a distinct sculptural quality to the room, all while having a homey sense of comfort.
Its furrows are produced by trimming the New Zealand wool at different levels, thereby creating a compelling graphic pattern and a visual sense of depth. This forms an eye-catching shadow-play that gives a sense of being two-tone rather than monochrome.
The rug’s single rounded corner gives it a unique character, a dynamic expression in any setting, presenting the user with opportunity for spatial exploration.
“The Relevo rug came to be as it often does; on the drawing board with paper and pencil," says Studiopepe on the design. "We like to create a whole story around a project, this time with a rug that could be a sculpture in its own right, virtually changing the perception of a room. Relevo’s swooping lines were inspired by land art and its sometimes furrowed, hypnotic paths in the soil.
Relevo means relief in Latin, emblematic of the rug’s geometric pattern, made by trimming the hand tufted rug in levels and thereby creating a subtle effect of light and shadow, a compelling visual expression.”
The designer duo speaks of Relevo Rug as an imagined cross-section between Scandinavian and Italian design. “There is a wonderful tension between Scandinavian and Italian design – both emphasize simplicity with a meaning. Often, it is marked by a particular interest in enduring materials, one that we deeply relate to as we aspire to design objects made to last and only become more beautiful with time.”
